How AI Data Centers Use Electricity

Where the power actually goes in an AI facility, and why grid connections are the real bottleneck.

In an AI facility most electricity goes to the accelerators themselves, followed by cooling, then networking, storage and facility overhead.

The headline figure operators care about is power usage effectiveness: total facility energy divided by IT energy. Efficient modern sites operate close to the IT load, which means further gains increasingly come from the servers rather than the building.

The binding constraint is rarely efficiency. It is interconnection: the time and capacity required to connect a large new load to the transmission network. That is why announcements now pair compute with generation, long-term power purchase agreements, and in some cases on-site or nuclear supply arrangements.
